Science Statement of Intent

Intent

At Brampton Ellis Primary School, we aim to give all of our children a sound understanding of the world around them through a curriculum that builds on previous knowledge. We equip children with the skills, knowledge and ability to think and work scientifically. We encourage children to be inquisitive and to confidently explore, ask questions and test their ideas. Through the programmes of study in the National Curriculum, children will build on their ‘Working Scientifically’ skills enabling them to: effectively use equipment, carry out experiments, explain concepts, ask questions and be curious about the world around them.

Implementation

Our teachers are enthusiastic about science and promote a positive attitude towards exploring and understanding the world around us. Our whole school approach to teaching science includes:

  • Planning and delivery of engaging lessons, with scientific equipment, to aid understanding of conceptual knowledge.

  • Introduction of new concepts and vocabulary.

  • Knowledge and skills that are built upon from previous learning through the use of retrieval practice.

  • Opportunities to encourage and enable children to work scientifically, explore and find out for themselves.

  • Effective formative assessment and feedback that informs future learning.

Impact

Our approach at Brampton Ellis Primary School results in children who are motivated and excited to discover and explore the world around them, whilst working scientifically.
