HLTA - Learning Support

Welcome to Puffin Class!

Puffin Class is the year 2 class taught by Mrs Atherton and is supported by Miss Paris.  Our classroom ethos promotes the whole school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience and we strive to help the children develop their independence over the year in preparation for their transition KS2.  We will always encourage them to try their best and support each other, even when something is challenging.

The first two weeks back will focus on PSHE, with the remaining topics throughout the year being history and geography based:

First two weeks – Understanding emotions, behaviour expectations, classroom expectations, accepting differences.

  • Autumn Term – Polar Explorers, where they will look at maps of the Polar region and learn all about Captain Scott and how he got to the South Pole.

  • Spring Term – Africa, where the children will learn all about the country and compare it to Brampton.

  • Summer Term – Castles, we will be learning about the Norman timeline, William the conqueror and visit Conisbrough castle

We have a love of reading at our school.  The children are encouraged to read as much as possible during the week, including at home. We will be enjoying a range of stories during our English lessons. We will be doing whole class reading later in the year where we look at extracts of stories and look at how to answer questions based on the book. Here are some examples of the stories we will be looking in English.

Not now Bernard! By David McKee

Traction man by Mini Grey

Lost and found by Oliver Jeffers

Our Tower by Joseph Coelho

The owl who was afraid of the dark by Jill Tomlinson

The dragon in the library by Louie Stowell

Our PE days are on Wednesday (indoor) and Friday (outdoor).  Children must bring a suitable PE kit to get changed into on both days.  They will also need to bring a water bottle to school every day.

As a class, we believe that hard work and resilience will ensure that everyone achieves to the best of their ability. Our classroom is one where every child’s work is valued, all ideas and opinions are encouraged, and the children are given the tools and support to work at their own level.  We hope you will join us in encouraging your child to work hard and take pride in their work.
