Welcome to Oystercatchers Class!

Oystercatchers Class is one of the Year 4 classes that is taught by Miss Cunningham and supported by Mrs Savage. Our classroom ethos promotes the whole school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience and we strive to help the children develop their independence over the year.  We will always encourage them to try their best and support each other, even when something is challenging.

The first two weeks back will focus on PSHE, with the remaining topics throughout the year being history and geography based:

First two weeks – Understanding emotions, behaviour expectations, classroom expectations, accepting differences.

  • Autumn Term – The Tudors.  The children will have the opportunity to visit Gainsborough Old Hall and explore life during the Tudor period.

  • Spring Term – Spain.  The children will be developing their fieldwork skills in and around school as well as taking part in a flamenco dancing workshop.

  • Summer Term – Ancient Egypt. The children will visit Weston Park Museum in Sheffield to take part in an Egyptian Workshop and explore artefacts.

We have a love of reading at our school.  The children are encouraged to read as much as possible during the week, including at home. We will be enjoying a range of novels in class during story time as well as allowing the children time throughout the school day to read for pleasure. Here are some of the reading for pleasure texts that we will be enjoying as a class over the year:

  • The Dot- Peter Reynolds

  • The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane- Kate DiCamillo

  • The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe- CS Lewis

  • Secrets of a Sun King- Emma Carroll

Our PE days are on Monday (indoor) and Tuesday (outdoor).  Children must bring a suitable PE kit to get changed into on both days.  They will also need to bring a water bottle to school every day.

Children in Y4 will get the opportunity to take part in swimming lessons during the summer term. We also take the mult

iplication check later in the year and would encourage practising of times tables at home.

As a class, we believe that hard work and resilience will ensure that everyone achieves to the best of their ability. Our classroom is one where every child’s work is valued, all ideas and opinions are encouraged, and the children are given the tools and support to work at their own level.  We hope you will join us in encouraging your child to work hard and take pride in their work.
